Press | Interview for Wild Hearted

It seems like a million years (or perhaps a million lifetimes) since I released my first book on house sitting and full-time travel, but it turns out it actually was just earlier this year that This Job is Shit made its debut on a number of eBook platforms. Admittedly, thanks to a certain pandemic, sales have been basically non-existent for a while now, but I’m still pretty happy with how the release went. I got some press out of it, connected with cool travellers from around the world, and got some good feedback from readers too.

Thanks to Ashley Hubbard over at Wild Hearted, I actually had a chance to talk about the book, house sitting, and T.O.F.U. late last month, which was nice since I hadn’t really discussed such things in what seems like too long. Needless to say, the pandemic has changed my usual routine of house sitting between Thailand and Vietnam, but I’m happy to be on the Vietnam side of things even if it means I haven’t been hanging out with many dogs.

House sitting has certainly changed right now due to the pandemic, and I’m not sure when it will pick-up again. I suspect people will focus more on local travel, and they will still need house sitters to do that, but the ability for house sitters to travel the world may not be a thing for a long time. It’s hard to tell what travel will be like as things start to move again, but if it comes with higher prices and restrictions such as mandatory quarantines, it’s likely that the number of sits available in smaller areas will dwindle. I can’t imagine places like New York City, London, Paris, etc. running out of options, but those places are also hard to get bookings in due to the competition. In fact, the pandemic may make it even harder to get sits there if their overall number decreases.

Hopefully, as the world figures out what travel is going to look like in the future, house sitting will become at least a small part of my life again. I don’t expect it will ever be the same for many reasons, but I do hope I can get some critter cuddles in every now and then at least.

For now, if you’re interested in learning my thoughts on the pandemic and travel, as well as a bunch of other stuff, head over to Ashley’s blog to read the interview.
